Barely out of the gate of 2008, December’s holiday cheer was greeted with January’s dim news of companies announcing their round of job cuts.
This is on top of the job cuts already announced last December.
January Job Cuts:
- Harley Davidson cuts 1000 jobs
- Microsoft to cut 5000 jobs
- Intel cuts 6000 jobs and some factories
- United Airlines to cut 1000 jobs
- Bose to cut 1000 jobs.
- Ericsson to cut 5000 jobs.
- Mining Company BHP Billiton to cut 6000 jobs
- Clear Channel Communications to cut 1,850 jobs
- Luxury clothing brand Burberry to cut 290 jobs
- Food firm, Vion, is cutting 820 jobs
- ConocoPhillips to cut 1300 employees.
- GE Capital to cut between 7000 to 11,000 jobs
- Circuit City closes all stores, 34000 to lose jobs
- Car rental company, Hertz, cuts 4000 jobs.
- WellPoint cuts 1,500 jobs
- Chipmaker AMD cuts 1,100 workers
- Honda US cuts 3,100 jobs and production.
- Accenture Philippines lays off 500 workers.
- Software maker Autodesk to cut 750 jobs.
- Grattan cuts 1000 jobs.
- Sanyo Electric cuts 1200 jobs
- Google cuts 100 HR staff.
- Motorola to cut 4000 jobs.
- Jaguar Land Rover to cut 450 jobs.
- Barclay’s to cut 4200 jobs.
- UK’s Nottingham City Council will cut 350 jobs
- Drug company Pfizer to cut 800 jobs
- Computer Storage maker, Seagate, will cut 800 workers in the US and replaces its CEO and COO
- JCB to cut 684 jobs
- Waterford Wedgwood, makers of crystal and china wares, will cut 367 jobs.
- Swedish engineering firm, Alfa Laval, will cut 1,000 jobs worldwide.
- Boeing, the aircraft maker, will cut 4,500 jobs.
- Schlumberger, an oil field services company, will cut up to 1,000 jobs
- Walgreens to cut 1000 jobs.
- Macy’s Inc. will close 11 underperforming stores in nine states - resulting in 960 workers laid off.
- Nissan to cut 1200 jobs in Sunderland
- Dell Ireland to cut 1900 jobs
- 250 workers to be cut at ngineering firm FG Wilson.
- Former IBM Computer Division bought by the Chinese, Lenovo, will cut 2,500 workers.
- Data storage company, EMC, announces a cut of 2400 jobs
- UK Loan Firm, Cattles, to cut 1000 jobs.
- Aluminum maker Alcoa to cut 13,500 jobs and 1700 contractors.
- Retailer Marks and Spencer cuts 1000 jobs
- Computer peripherals maker, Logitech, cuts 15% of workforce
- Insurer Cigna cuts 4% of workforce 1100 jobs
Add to that, Toyota announced an 11 day holiday for its plants in Japan. Who knows how many companies will follow Toyota’s example of a Work Holiday?
