Credit Card Limit ScamHere’s a new scam being reported in the Metro. A card holder receives a call from somebody saying that their credit card limit has been increased, all they have to do is surrender their credit card (so that it can be replaced with a new one) to a banking representative that will visit them.

The almost-victim called up the bank to verify and found out that it wasn’t true. She went to the police instead and they were successfully able to en-trap the person. Found in the person of the messenger was a letter and identification card bearing the bank’s logo.

Scam Targeting OFW RelativesHere’s a variant of the Dugo Dugo gang scam, but this time targeting relatives of OFW’s. It’s hard to believe that in this day and age that this scam still works, considering that it has been going on for years already and has been widely covered in mainstream media.

How this scam works is that a relative of an OFW(usually the wife) will be contacted via cellphone by somebody impersonating somebody from the Dept of Foreign Affairs then they will be told that their relative is in distress and needs some money. The relative is told intimate details about the OFW’s relative that they will be convinced to send cash to the scammers.

How not to be Scammed Madoff StyleAs if we didn’t get enough angst out of the financial markets crumbling due to the sub prime crisis, another scandal that rocked the financial circles was the “Ponzi scheme” run by former Nasdaq chairman, Bernard Madoff, that finally came tumbling down and that cost investors an estimated $50 Billion.

Ponzi scheme basically takes in money from investors and pays them off with money acquired from the next batch of investors. Aptly simplified as robbing Peter to pay Paul. This scheme will work as long as new investors are always coming in and the old investors do not pull out their money. The scam all boils down to trust!
